July 4th

Yesterday morning, we traveled up the mountain to Doi Suthep to a temple there. There is an overlook where you can take pictures of the entire city of Chiangmai down below. Thought you might like to see it.

Yep, wouldn't you know, the day we went it rained. So the mountain was encased in clouds. Oh well! Maybe I will get to experience it when I come back.

Last night, we went to an Independence Day celebration at the American Consulate here in Chiangmai. I know I have used this word before, but it was definitely surreal. Another experience I never thought I would have. They had watermelon and pie eating contests, swing music, American food, and fireworks (which we missed). It was a strange experience being surrounded by so many Americans speaking English. I have gotten so used to not understanding side conversations:)

Almost every afternoon this week, we have gone to teach English at the school where the younger orphans attend. I finally got some pictures yesterday of that time. It's definitely different than teaching in the states - and I am sure will be a whole lot easier once I have learned some Thai:) They are appreciative of what we have shared though. The kids know some basic words (numbers, colors, body parts, animals) and can memorize songs, but this week in my classroom, we have been trying to show them how to read simple words. After three days, they are getting a little braver to try. However, they are used to whole class response, and are a little reluctant to speak on their own. It will be good to come back and see what happens when I can be with them more consistently.

Today, we are baking cupcakes for the orphans - who LOVE sweet treats. We will be going to teach English and then to visit both of the orphanages here in Doi Saket. This will be a special time - but also a difficult time for most of team. We have gotten very attached to these children, and it will be tough to say good-bye. I am thankful that I will be back here soon!

Happy Independence Day Jen! No fireworks for us today..Lot's of rain! I love the pictures of you teaching. With your teaching talents...after a year of you working with them...they will be speaking English fluently.
Take care of yourself.
Love you and miss you...

We miss you too Jen. We spent the day going to a parade and fireworks tonight. You have really been on my mind today. I cannot wait to see you at the airport on Sunday. Kara keeps saying that she is going to go on the airplane with Jen. Love you - miss you - can't wait to see you!!!!
