Thailand - the first 6 hours

We made it safely to Thailand - two smooth plane rides and a short car ride. This is the first time that either of us has been to this country. Can we just say...wow! It is nothing like Cambodia...no potholes in the road, no trash, very few motos on the roads, and lots of green trees and grass. People actually obey the traffic laws! We have been told that this is how Cambodia would have looked if not for the war and fighting there.

The guest house is quite an upgrade! We think it's like something that you would stay in while vacationing in Florida. We even have a sink, a toilet, and a bathtub. No more brushing our teeth in the toilet:)

Mountains surround the city that we are in, and it is absolutely beautiful. It is still hot...but not as humid as Cambodia. At night, it gets a little cooler here.

We went to the orphanage after settling in to the guest house. We hope to get some pictures posted soon. This orphanage started two years ago with just bamboo huts...which were not enough to keep the snakes and scorpions out of the kids' beds. Just this month, the concrete dormitories were finished, along with a dining hall. The property has about 4 acres...complete with playground and soccer field.

I (Jen) was so attached to Cambodia, that I wondered if my heart would be big enough for this place as well. But as soon as I saw these kids, I became attached to them as well. They are beautiful!

Tonight, we are going to the night bazaar to do some shopping. Tomorrow, we will be heading up into the mountains to see where these children come from. We will also be doing a medical clinic there. There are many more things on tap for the week...including teaching English, visiting another orphanage, teaching the kids how to play baseball and kickball, and taking in some tourist sights.

We hope to post again tomorrow!

Hi Keith and Jen,
Just caught up on your blog and can't read it without tears...
Thanks for writing all the details; it makes us feel connected to you even though we sit here in our plush, air-conditioned cars and homes. I am
convicted...

They are blessed, though they live without so many "things" --it seems they are like the Children of Israel in depending on God for their daily manna, and thus, experience a closer, more intimate and "real" relationship with Him...while we are caught up with making our lives more comfortable and easy and fun...

Q: Is there religious freedom in the country now? Do the orphans and students go to "church"??
I'm praying for you'll be safe and blessed.
